Team 2: Mona, Jacob, Phil, Liam
Team 3: Kirsten, Barry, Mark P., Phi

Task 1: Using your popper, demonstrate/discuss the following:

1) Newton's 1st Law
2) Newton's 2nd Law
3) Newton's 3rd Law

Discussion: How could this activity be altered to a) be more effective and b) be more appropriate for a 9th grade audience? Can you think of any other inquiry based applications of this activity?

Department Meeting:
January 6th, 2012
meeting minutes

1. Prayer

2. Strategy Shares:

  • Riaz: Assessment reflection process.

3. Freshman Science Update
  • When: 2013-2014 school year
  • What: UC approved Freshman Physics, TIGHTLY aligned with 9th grade math that offers options for high level and low level students.
  • Goals for this year: a) complete scope, sequence and objectives b) submit to UC c) develop a FUNDED summer development team/process.
  • Food for thought: How will we provide options for our accelerated and struggling students? What would those options look like? (we will explore these questions at our next meeting).

4. Exploring Physics

Team 1: Riaz, Tom, Mark H.
Team 2: Mona, Jacob, Phil, Liam
Team 3: Kirsten, Barry, Mark P., Phi

Task 1: Watch video below, then answer the questions that follow on whiteboard #1:

1) What is the average speed of the car?
2) What is the average velocity of the car?
3) What is true about the "sum" of the forces acting on the car? Explain.

Discussion: How could this activity be altered to a) be more effective and b) be more appropriate for a 9th grade audience?

Task 2:
Follow the procedure below:

Procedure
1. Prop your desk up as shown in the picture below:

ramp

2. Roll a C-battery down a few times. What do you observe?
3. Agree on an observation to report back to the group.
4. You will be given 10-minutes to accomplish a task. Use
whiteboard #2 to graphically or diagrammatically show you answer.

Discussion: How could this activity be altered to a) be more effective and b) be more appropriate for a 9th grade audience?
